01-10-09 - pdf (805 KB) - "Spectral Metal: Saving Time And Expense In The Manufacturing Process" by Robert J. Crase, Deposition Sciences, Inc.

In applications that require optimized optical performance, combined with environmental stability and robust mechanical properties, spectral metal is a good choice. In the early 20th century, optical coating technology was used to apply highly reflective coatings to metal reflectors, greatly improving light output. In this article, Bob Crase discusses spectral metal coating, a 21st-century breakthrough technology developed at DSI. Hybrid dichroic coatings are now being applied to metal to deliver improved efficiency in UV curing systems. Spectral metal coatings are also being used to improve signal-to-noise ratios in image recovery systems and to improve light output performance in solid-state lighting systems.

10-31-08 - pdf (132 KB) - "Optical Thin Film Coating Methods" by Robert J. Crase, Deposition Sciences, Inc., and Dr. Margareta Hamel, Auer Lighting, GmbH

The Ubiquitous Thin Film Coating - With myriad uses, it pays to get to know the processes. Bob Crase, Assistant Director of Commercial Manufacturing at DSI and Dr. Margareta Hamel, Manager of Research and Development for Thin-Film Technology at Auer Lighting GmbH in Bad Gandersheim, Germany, discuss the various coating deposition methods to help you decide which process is best for your application. Choosing the right method for the right job is the key to an optical system that is designed to last and that will perform as designed.

07-10-08 - pdf (2.04 MB) - "Creating Patterned Multispectral Filters" by Michael Tommervik, Process Engineer, DSI.

In recent years the explosion in demand for multispectral imaging has coupled with the industry's insatiable need for weight reduction, thereby greatly increasing the demand for more sophisticated approaches to producing optical filters that are used in these systems. Tommervik's article explores a new method to meet this weight reduction challenge in multispectral systems, eliminating traditional methods of beam-splitting optics and multiple detectors . . .

12-15-07 - pdf (193 KB) - "Advanced Optical Coatings Enable Energy-Efficient Lighting" by DSI President Lee Bartolomei.

The key to energy-efficient halogen is a hot mirror coating that allows wasted heat produced by the filament of a halogen lamp to be converted to white light, thus reducing the amount of electricity required to produce the desired light output. This Photonics Solutions Update article examines the use of optical coatings to achieve this goal.

01-02-07 - pdf (270 KB) - "Optics Perspective" by Bob Crase, Program Manager, DSI.

Major advances in optics and optical coating technology have been driven by the demands of the telecom boom. These events have moved optics into the realm of the consumer. This move into the consumer market has required manufacturers to increase efficiencies and reduce costs, yet produce high quality products that meet today's market demands.
